Interlude (The Big Nothing Part 12)

The rain beat against the car window, the windshield wipers stalled, and we had to stop in the middle of the highway.

As The Inch clutched at the wheel, turning the engine over and over again; I looked out the side window. The sky subtly illuminated with streaks of lightning behind the great jumbles of clouds; lines sketched out of the grey canvass. The rain was coming down hard, Inch finally woke the vehicle up with a jolt, and we continued down the road.

We could see the dim lights of the city not too far away, the whole car smelled damp from having the windows down and cigarettes squashed in the small door ashtrays. It was dead quiet, all you could hear was the hum of the engine and the rumbling of the clouds, when we stopped; the rain pecked at the skin.

The whole earth woke with flashes and the smell of fresh ground.

We sat from the outside balcony of my apartment and watched as the sky roared; the rain making the streetlights steam and the smoke stack of a nearby factory, off in the horizon, glow dimly as the red light pulsated throughout the night.
